How to choose an auto repair shop:
Choosing an auto repair shop is one of the most important decisions you can make. and finding a good one can be difficult. The Auto repair industry is in the top 10 most complained about businesses. It is very important that you find a auto repair shop and mechanic that you trust. When searching for an auto repair shop and a mechanic, you might compare your search to looking for a new Doctor. The difference is this person is going to be responsible for your VEHICLE’S health.
If we use the analogy of finding a mechanic is the same as finding a doctor, think about the first thing you would look for finding a doctor, how many people do you know that would go to a doctor that did not have a license to practice medicine? I don’t think too many of us would! So when looking for a mechanic, first thing is to make sure they are ASE Certified (preferably ASE MASTER Certified).
The best way to find a good trustworthy mechanic is a referral from a friend or relative. These are people you trust and therefore would not recommend someone that does not do good, honest work.
However, if that fails, thanks to the internet, we have access to a wealth of information right at our fingertips! Google “auto repair shops” and you will have enough information to begin your search for the perfect auto repair shop and mechanic.
The first thing to look for is reviews. You know the saying that people who have a great experience will tell one person, but if they have a bad experience they will tell TEN + people! Reviews are tricky and there are a few things to look for when reading them. Be wary of shops that have an extremely large amount of reviews (40 or more), in a very short time. It is possible that they are using a service, such as demand force to automatically generate reviews. If there are one or two bad reviews for a business that also has several good reviews, it doesn’t necessarily mean the auto repair shop is not a good place to go…..some people are just hard to please!
After you have narrowed your search, go and check out the repair shop’s website. There you should find the history of the Company, how long they have been in business, if the mechanics are certified, etc. Most likely they will have pictures of their shop. A clean shop is a good sign that the employees are conscientious. If they take good care of the shop, they are likely to take good care of your car! Again, you most likely wouldn’t return to a dirty doctors office.
Lastly, call them up! Have a list of questions ready when you call. Even if it is a busy place, they should be willing to take the time to answer all of your questions. If they don’t, maybe you should keep looking because if they will treat you that before they even earn your business, how will they treat you once you are a customer?
Remember, when you do find your perfect auto repair shop and new mechanic, thank them by referring them to all your friends and family. A mechanic is like a good doctor – hard to find but once you do you are loyal for life!
